Barbara Cowart

The composer and singer behind a number of songs.

Barbara’s musical training began with her ballet lessons at 4 in Pasadena, California followed by her first guitar at age 7, learning Bob Dylan songs. She took accordion lessons at ages 7 to 9. She was performing recitals at Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Her piano lessons began at age 9, and continued throughout high school and college for a music major; that became a minor when she graduated with honors in film. She took viola lessons in school 4th to 7th grade while playing in the Pasadena All City Orchestra, and guitar lessons during college, from Phil Mallory- professional session player and performer.

She also performed in musical theater as Wendy in "Peter Pan", and was in "Hansel and Gretel" and "Babes in Toyland" at age 9. She sang in the play "Pajama Game," a song hit called "I'm Not at All In Love" in James Coday’s "Broadway in Review."

She sang as Nancy in the play, "Oliver" and won the Finian’s Rainbow Choral contest sponsored by KCET TV. She performed for Fred Astaire at the Hollywood premiere of the movie "Finian’s Rainbow."

Barbara had her own band, Silver Dollar where she sang Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette songs. She commonly performed at The Bluebird Café, Sportsman's Lounge, The Santa Barbara Biltmore, Miramar, radio commercials, and commonly did weddings, and private parties. She also sang "Top 40 Songs" with the band Gotcha. She performed for Clint Eastwood in the Monterey, California club "The Flamingo." At this same time Barbara was pursuing a modeling career.

Some of the CD’s that she has performed in include background vocals have been with Emmylou Harris on her CD "White Shoes" and "The Ballad of Sally Rose". Johnny Cash's CD, "Johnny 99". Sissy Spacek's CD, "Hangin' Up My Heart" singing harmony with Vince Gill. Albert Lee's CD, "Albert Lee". And singing harmony with Linda Ronstadt on Nicolette Larson's demo.

Barbara's songwriting began with a poetry and song class in college at U.C. Santa Barbara, taught by the beat generation poet Kenneth Rexroth. Her song writing credits include "The Feelin'" recorded by Rosanne Cash. This song was co-written with her husband Donivan Cowart, known as co-writer of "Leavin' Louisana In The Broad Daylight". She wrote 8 songs and recorded them at Warner Bros. Studio in London with Lawrence Juber from Paul McCartney's band, Wings. She wrote and performed 8 songs with Rick Cunah's band for a cable TV show "DownHome USA" which was shown to the U.S. Army troops. Barbara wrote and performed two songs for the TV show "Nashville Gospel". She has written songs with Hank DeVito who wrote "Queen of Hearts" and co-wrote "Small Town Saturday Night". He taught her to write melodies for bridges that the Beatles called "the middle eight". These are the eight bars in a song that make the bridge.

Barbara is currently singing with the "Peoples Church Choir" in Franklin, Tennessee. She has performed live, singing and playing acoustic guitar at Nashville's Bluebird Café with musicians Tommy Hannum playing guitars and singing harmony as he does with Ricky Van Shelton, and Tommy Spurlock playiing guitars as he has with Highway 101, Rodney Crowell, and Carlene Carter to name a few. Her daughter, Jolene sang harmony with Tommy at one of these shows. She also opened for Rodney Crowell at Bogey's in Nashville, and won third place in the Tru-Value Contest competing for a spot on the  Grand Ole Opry and $5,000. She was opening act for Rodney Crowell and Carlene Carter in California at the Sundance Saloon in Calabassas and also sang dates at the Palomiino Club. She is continually doing demo work for writers Hank devito, Paul Kennerly, Rodney Crowell, Bob Evans (formerly of the rock group Badfinger), her husband Donivan Cowart and his brother Martin Cowart, writer of Emmylou's "One Paper Kid" and BobbyBare's "Dollar Pool Fool" as well as her own songs. She and her daughters, Jolene, April, Rachel, and Jenny, have performed "Kareoke" at the Brentwood Fair and Fieldstone Farms.

She currently works part time as a substitute teacher in all levels of public school to keep a hand in guiding and staying abreast of her 5 children.
